Yes, we have started The Outsiders! This is one of my all time favorite books, and I love sharing it with my students each year. We have taken our time with the first couple of chapters as the students get to know Pony, Darry, Soda, Steve, Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny. This week we will dive into the conflict between the Socs and the Greasers, and students will continue to practice using the literary signposts. I have been impressed with how quickly they have picked up on noticing and noting Contrasts and Contradictions, Memory Moments, and Tough Questions. We will continue with A-ha Moments, Words of the Wiser, and Again and Again.
A quick reminder that students need to be reading daily at home. They are required to record the date, book title, and page read to on the white book tracker each day. Then during our first couple minutes of class, I provide a prompt for the students to respond to from the previous night's reading. This is a weekly grade, and can't be made up. Please remind, encourage, prod, or even read with your student. Sometimes seventh graders do not think ahead to the future consequences of their current actions and go the path of least resistance.
I know at the beginning of the year parents are bombarded with paperwork. And if you are anything like me, you sign what needs to be signed and toss the rest. I am guessing our purple iRead Donation letter either didn't make it home or was tossed out, so I am going to attach a digital copy below. Basically if you or someone you know would be able/interested in helping sponsor the iRead program, we would be ever so grateful. Financial donations help provide candy and other incentives for Bingos which benefits all students. And of course for students working toward the iRead Club, the financial donations pay for the t-shirts and the big party. If you know of a business that might donate, we will put their logo on the back of this year's t-shirt. Please spread the word, so that we can continue these fun incentives for reading for our students. Thank you so much!
